Reading roundup, fiction edition
Jun. 18th, 2026 12:49 pmOut Law by Jim Butcher - This is a Dresden Files novella set during or perhaps shortly after Twelve Months that came out in May. It took me a while to read it because the summary looked like it featured Marcone heavily and I ... really do not like Marcone AT ALL. (I know this is a very minority opinion among Dresden Files readers.) However, it turns out that he appears for a couple pages in the beginning to set up the plot, and is otherwise Sir Not Appearing In This Book. And I really enjoyed it!
Spoilers/reactions: ( Under here )
Emmett Hardy series by Chris Kelsey (books 1-6) - This is a noir-flavored series of mystery/crime/police procedurals set in small-town Oklahoma in the 1960s and 1970s that I inhaled over the course of the spring.
More about that: ( Under the cut, no specific spoilers )
The Inheritance by Ilona Andrews - This is "Ilona Andrews does portal fantasy." The first 2/3 or so of the book was GREAT. And then the ending was staggeringly disappointing. So all in all, I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about it.

eco-friendly electronics, 615 recipes, farm books
Jun. 18th, 2026 10:36 amHappy Thursday! The grass pollen is really trying to get me this week so I'm hiding inside with the windows closed and air con cranked.
Here's some links!
Art
Amazing collage art by Lynne Perrella!
Northwest Troll sculptures by Danish environmental artist Thomas Dambo
Anticapitalist design case studies collected by Prof. Matthew Wizinsky who wrote a book called Design after Capitalism
Tech
How to Buy Ethical and Eco-Friendly Electronics from Wired, last updated March 2026. It smells a little of affiliate link stink, but the early parts about how to pick devices that can/will last longer, fixing them, buying secondhand, etc is good advice.
Sigil Séance Against Space Billionaires = tech x witchcraft!
An interesting alternative to organizing RSS feeds besides alphabetically or by topic.
Books
Newly released from Project Gutenberg:
- An Island Garden by Celia Thaxter (with illustrations!). This caught my eye because I'm reading Elizabeth and Her German Garden which came out around the same time
- A Calendar of Dinners, with 615 Recipes by Marion Harris Neil. I think this is actually a promo cookbooks from Crisco, but this one is VERY detailed. And there's vegetarian dishes, too!
RSS Feeds
A few recent blogs added to my feed reader:
- Farms on my Bookshelf (RSS) -- a book blog focused on memoirs of people who "got away from it all" aka left the city to start farms, or what have you
- A1 Mail Art Archive (RSS) -- old school mail art exchanges
- A Hundred Years Ago (RSS) -- food blog focused on recipes from a hundred years ago!
Whumpex and more
Jun. 17th, 2026 11:17 pmStrategic Alliances (Babylon 5, Londo & G'Kar & Na'Toth, 2900 wds, post-canon)
One of my requests was for Londo and Na'Toth interacting, maybe teaming up if something happened to G'Kar, and this satisfied that craving very nicely.
I picked up a pinch hit for Whumpex as well as my assignment, so I have a couple of things in the collection.
I also wrote a pinch hit for Casefic (done, not revealed) and I have my Id Pro Quo assignment. There are a few different exchanges currently or soon to be in nominations, including Multifandom Tropefest and Just Married, but I really need to not sign up for anything new in the near future; I'm enjoying doing exchanges again, but I want July to be mostly recharge time.
I finished my Dungeon Crawler Carl reread, and now I'm going back and rereading particular chapters for clues and other lore. I don't know if I'd say I'm having fandom feelings about it (for one thing, the state of most of the fanfic is dire) but I'm really enjoying it. I'm into it enough that I ended up backing Matt Dinniman's Patreon because I don't want to wait until the next book comes out to read new chapters.
Childproofing the World - Sue Storm's Role in The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025)
Jun. 16th, 2026 09:15 pm(This probably should be a fic, but I don't have the brain space to write fic right now.)
Preamble
Firstly, this isn't vague-blogging or subtweeting or whatever, and I'm not intending to tell any specific person they're wrong on the Internet. It's something that I've been thinking about since I saw FF:FS last year.I'm further not telling anyone they should like the film if they didn't, or that they're bad for not wanting to watch a Disney movie prominently featuring pregnancy and parenthood. I'm sympathetic to having had enough of that genre and/or have been burned by it too many times. Totally fair! If you don't like plots with babies, you won't like this movie. There is definitely a baby!
I do, however, intend this to be something of a rebuttal to the "I don't like that the only female character was just a mom" line of criticism, which I've run into since the trailer. I also want to explain why I think that framing Sue's role as primarily a mother is reductive, and ignores some of the more interesting things the film was doing with her character.
( This will be long, and will spoil the entire movie )
Fandom 50 S4 Post 28: Concert observations from a casual fan
Jun. 16th, 2026 01:05 pmIn chrono order for funsies.
Jin's concert September 2025.
I really liked hearing from someone who had gone to Jin's concerts in Seoul thinking that it was gonna be OK . . . only to end up realizing how amazing he is as a performer. Also how unique his concert was. FWIW, I think that a lot of ppl (ARMYs included) had the same kind of awakening to Jin's AWESOMECAKINESS and talents, heheh.
A good review of the BTS comeback performance on March 21st, 2026.
This one was interesting due to how, because she's not an ARMY (though she knows and enjoys BTS music, but, again, in a v. casual way?), she talked abt the negative aspects of BTS' comeback show in Gwanghwamun. The lines, the extreme security measures that ended up inconveniencing way too many ppl including herself and her mother.
THAT SAID, she enjoyed BTS' performance (and really dug the addition of "Arirang" into "Body to Body".)
NB: A lot was discussed abt the way the police and the city of Seoul organized the crowds to the point of driving everyone bonkers. OTOH, however, there were zero reports of ppl being harmed--an important point given the Itaewon crowd crush tragedy a few years ago.
Could things have been a bit looser? Maybe, but there we are.
BTS' first concert in YEARS. Seoul Day 1 of the ARIRANG tour.
Let me point out that, in addition to this being the literal first concert and all the pressures that come with that, the weather did its best to be HORRIBLE. It was chilly (46F / 7.7 Celsius) AND there was non-stop rain. So the stage was potentially slippery. Due to the condensation and other things associated with moderate, (again) non-stop rain, some of the effects (especially the smoke) went sideways. There was a steady fog for the first Act, frex.
ANYWAYS, NOLGGUYA had some opinions (a few criticisms that feel valid (to me) and tons of praise) on the show.
Here goes nothing!

I mostly post about: Daily life and whatever musings come to me. Sometimes I'll post my thoughts on certain media, like books I read or games I played, and sometimes I'll write about how my writing process is going. I'm not sure exactly what I'll be sharing for the most part though. I put off making an introduction here until I got a few posts up, and this is what it's been like so far. Who knows what I'll be sharing later though!
My hobbies are:Creative writing, reading, doodling, exploring new music, video games
My fandoms are:N/A; I wouldn't consider myself active in any fandoms per se. I appreciate Percy Jackson art, and that is as close to fandom as it gets.
I'm looking to meet people who: Enjoy chatting about whatever's on their mind (I don't mind if it's mundane or deep) and preferably, though it's not a must, also enjoy creative writing.
My posting schedule tends to be: Sporadic, I think. I'm not sure. I might be active daily at some point, and I might get busy and not have the energy to write more than my daily creative writing word count.
When I add people, my dealbreakers are: First and foremost bigotry of any kind (homophobia, racism and most far-right winger things, just to name a few). I am staunchly against the use of genAI especially in creative works, and I tend to keep politics to a minimum (it's already depressing enough as it is).
Before adding me, you should know: I'm a neurodivergent, queer individual with leftist-ish views. I'm posting mainly to keep my IRL (off-site) friends updated, but I'm up for chatting in the comments and/or private messages! (I'm not sure what this site's etiquette is on that yet)
Hello Everyone!

My fandoms are: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Shadow & Bone (Grishaverse), The Hunger Games franchise, MARVEL studios, Studio Ghibli, Sailor Moon, Jurassic Park, Divergent, Scream franchise, Taylor Swift, Special Ops: Lioness, Fringe, Stranger Things, Anne Boleyn, It: Welcome to Derry, Untamed, Card Captor Sakura, Battlestar Galactica, Ready or Not (1 & 2), Disney OG, Katherine Pierce (TVD), Nina Dobrev, Elle Fanning, Ben Barnes, etc.
I'm looking to meet people who:have things in common or don't. I like lasting friendships. We don't have to talk everyday/post but I do like comments just like I'll comment on your posts
My posting schedule tends to be: very sporadic. But I'm working on this and would like to post once a week.
When I add people, my dealbreakers are: 2slgbtqia+ phobia, racism, antisemitism, fatphobia, close-mindedness, jerks, rudeness, making everything a competition, propaganda, politics all the time, anti-feminism, extreme zionists and anti-semites, red flags. If you're expecting happy-go-lucky posts all the time, I'm not for you.
Before adding me, you should know: I may be or seem really unapproachable but I'm a kind person looking for new friends that'll be active for me and I them. Also, I'm open to 16 + just know that I post a lot of adult only things so if you are a minor acknowledge that and let me know so I can decide from there.
Sorta Music Monday
Jun. 15th, 2026 09:51 amWho taught you how to move on? Who showed you how to make it look so damn easy? ... I know you didn't learn on your own. Girl, who taught you how to move on?
Which is, all and all, misogynistic: she can't just have gotten over this loser, some dude has to have helped, and he's now mad at the dude because dudes have more agency. Et cetera.
However, it does sound a little like he's asking for a hook up, since his rebound flings have not been satisfactory, and he would like to try out the dude who's been working so well for her. As the bridge says:
Who's been keeping you up at night?🤔🤔🤔
Seems like you've been doing alright.
Maybe I'd be too if I knew:
Who taught you how to move on?
* I just watched the video so I could link to it, and it's very funny to me that they don't show Shaboozey actually in the motorhome because he is tol.
** I guess he could be saying "Girl" in a gay way, but I suspect not coming from Kevin Powers. Note, also, that she seems to have moved to California and cut her hair, so...
